About Me

As a young student a teacher once told me I should, "persue art." Little did I know at the time I would be well into the fifth decade of my life before such a pursuit would begin.

I have no lofty thoughts about art, or what it is that I am trying to do with my art. It comes down to something fairly simple: being a very visual person, I like images. Doesn't matter so much if they are photographs, paintings, drawings, sketchings, or graphic design created electronically.

Light makes all the difference in an image. In my viewings, light is always the first thing I look for. Is it straight overhead, off to an angle, are there interesting shadows on the face of the object being observed? Capturing the light is a technique unto itself and I enjoy working out these problems. One fairly regular constant in my art is the placement of shadows and highlights. Some days I am more successful than others, and gray days are particularly distressing.

With just over 3,000 images in my flickr account, I am beginning to realize my "style."  In the beginning my focus was on watercolor paintings. You can find the ones I like most in my "Finished Pieces" set. But over time I have evolved away from this "finer" art, to a much more expressive style, that of the "sketch."

I belong to a world-wide group of people who refer to themselves as urban sketchers. In July of 2012, I attended the 3rd International Symposium of Urban Sketchers in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

I am the founder of the Annual West Coast Urban Sketchers Sketchcrawls.  We have had over 450 artists at four different events: San Francisco, Portland, San Diego and Tacoma over the past few years.  You can learn more about these events by clicking the link above.
